The winning bid for the project will be decided next December 27.

The project for the recovery of the Magdalena River, in order to make it the main cargo transportation corridor in the country, is making good progress.

This was the statement of the Director of Cormagdalena, Augusto Garcia Rodriguez, who announced that three world players in dredging activities applied to participate in the bidding process corresponding to the navigable channel of Barranquilla.

They are the Dutch companies Van Oord Dredging and Baggerbedrijf de Boer and Jan de Nul from Belgium, who aspire to win the contract for dredging the first 22.5 km of the river, which correspond to the entire navigable length in this important port on the Caribbean.

“I am pleased to announce this good news for the Barranquilla port, the Magdalena River and the country in general,” the director maintained as he indicated that the determination would be made on December 27 in the city.

“The participation of these big world players in dredging is one more sign that the Magdalena River captures international interest, because of its destiny of becoming the greatest Colombian cargo transportation route.  It is also a response to the recent flagging deregulation pushed by the national government”, he added.

According to the director, at a time when there is a great concern about the infrastructure of national roads, news like this ratifies the possibility of the Magdalena River becoming the best alternative to resolve the difficulties that the weather is causing for transportation, mainly of cargo, for both imports and exports.

The participation of these companies, combined with the changes in contracting for this dredging – which will be based on guaranteed depth instead of cubic meters moved, as was the practice in the past – is also very good news for the Barranquilla port, which will offer better conditions to increase the cargo to be moved by the port and, in consequence, national competitiveness.
