Colombia.s exports rose 22.3 per cent in August to $3.27 billion compared with the same month last year due to sales of petroleum and oil products, the government statistics agency said on Tuesday.
Colombia, Latin America.s No. 4 oil producer and the world.s No. 5 coal producer, is recovering robustly from the global financial crisis. The government forecasts growth of between 4.5 and 5 per cent this year. In August, traditional exports such as oil, nickel, coal and coffee rose 36.1 per cent to $2.18 billion with petroleum and oil products leading growth, the DANE statistics agency said in a statement.
Exports of oil and its products went up 31.7 per cent to $1.4 billion in August while coal exports shot up 52.4 per cent to $579 million and volumes rose 31.3 per cent to 6.8 million tonnes versus the same period last year, it said. Non-traditional exports increased 1.7 per cent to $1.08 billion in August versus August 2009, the agency said. In January to August, exports climbed 21.9 per cent to $25.67 billion compared with the same period last year, the government said. Petroleum and its products saw exports soar nearly 80 per cent in the year to August to $10.48 billion versus the same period in 2009.
